Zenith HDTV standard

A digital transmission system designed by Zenith has been selected by the high-definition TV “grand alliance” as the technology to be employed in all HDTV sets for the U.S.

Zenith’s “VSB” technology was selected over General Instrument’s “QAM” transmission system for use in both over-the-air broadcasting and cable HDTV delivery.

In a statement, members of the grand alliance — a group of companies that decided to join forces to develop the HDTV technology rather than go solo — said the Zenith system was selected on the basis of “HDTV coverage area, minimal interference with existing analog TV signals and robustness of the TV signal.”

Selection of the Zenith digital transmission system was called the “final major technical decision” before formal testing begins later this year.
