TNT, Cartoon Net Belgian ban backed

BRUSSELS — Turner Broadcasting System had a legal setback in Brussels over broadcasting TNT and Cartoon Network, but distributor Coditel said transmission will continue.

Scientific policy minister Jean-Maurice Dehousse said in a statement the Belgian State Council last week agreed with a government ban forbidding distribution of the channel in Brussels.

The council is a sort of constitutional court.

A Coditel spokesman on Monday said he believed the council’sruling had no impact on an earlier ruling by the Brussels commercial court, which rejected the government ban.

Dehousse said Coditel was broadcasting “without authorization” and that the authorities were likely to take action before the commercial court again.

The government argues that the Turner network violates the European Union’s Television Without Frontiers directive requiring broadcasters in principle to devote a majority of air time to European works.
