‘Robocop’ comes out firing

“Robocop: The Series” burst its way into the Nielsen national syndication rankings during the week ended March 20 with an arresting ratings performance.

The new Rysher Entertainment program debuted with a 5.4 mark in 81% of the country, putting it behind Paramount’s “Star Trek” duo (“Next Generation” plunged 20% from the previous week to a first-place 9.8, while “Deep Space Nine” beamed down 4% to 7.4), All American TV’s “Baywatch” (sinking 11% to 6.6) and MCA-TV’s “Universal Action Pack” (deactivating 15% to 5.8).

But it finished ahead of such series as Cannell’s “Renegade” (5.3), Warner Bros.’ “Kung Fu: The Legend Continues” (5.2), “Babylon 5” (4.7) and “Time Trax” (3.7), Par’s “The Untouchables” (3.4), All American’s “Acapulco H.E.A.T.” (3.3) and Rysher’s “The Highlander” (3.2).

Overall, it was not a good week for most syndicated shows. In fact, the only series in the top 15 to show a week-to-week increase was Twentieth TV’s off-Fox series “Cops,” which inched up one-tenth to 6.0 in the column encompassing duplicated viewing of the same episode.

King World’s “Oprah Winfrey” took the biggest hit among talkshows, sliding 11 % to 7.7.

Buena Vista TV’s “Live With Regis & Kathie Lee” rebounded from a 30% collapse the previous week, with the show recovering 18% of its audience.

In the newsmag genre, Par’s “Entertainment Tonight” slipped 4% to 8.5, but still led the pack by a wide margin.
