Ivan Reitman has signed to produce the film adaptation of the book “The Late Shift” for HBO.
Based on the current non-fiction work by New York Times reporter Bill Carter, “The Late Shift” chronicles the battle between Jay Leno and David Letterman to replace Johnny Carson as the king of latenight television.
“It’s a great human-interest story about what even the most famous and influential people really want from life,” Reitman said.
Among Reitman’s credits are “Dave,””Ghostbusters” and “Twins.”
HBO is clearly hoping to duplicate the critical success it has achieved with previous adaptations of such bestsellers as “Barbarians at the Gate” and “And the Band Played On.”
