NATPE award to Gustavo Cisneros

As a sign of the growing importance North Americans are according the Latin American TV market, NATPE Intl. will award its first Intl. Award of Excellence to Venezuelan media magnate Gustavo Cisneros during a ceremony Jan. 26.

Cisneros is chairman and CEO of Organizacion Cisneros, a diverse group of companies that operates businesses in mass communications, computer systems, consumer products, heavy metals, aluminum and real estate — everything, in fact , from baby bottles to gold mines. Sources say the company’s revenues approach $ 5 billion annually.

Among the company’s media holdings is Venevision, the No. 1 broadcaster in Venezuela and a major international TV producer and distributor of product throughout the world. Venevision has a holding in Univision, the growing Hispanic network in the U.S.

Cisneros was born in Caracas. He studied in the U.S. and is in his late 40s. He’s credited with having taken the reins of the company from his father and turning it into a global player in many fields, including telecommunications. Among other media-related activities, he sits on the board of Mexico’s TV conglom Televisa and was instrumental in having Venevision host last year’s Intl. Emmy Awards in New York.

A record number of delegates from Latin American is expected to attend the 31 st annual National Assn. of Television Program Executives confab in Miami. Cisneros reportedly will be present to receive his award.
