Murdoch muse makes Beijing balky

HONG KONG — Beijing’s anxiety over News Corp.’s plan to use satellite TV as a springboard into Chinese homes has resulted in a clampdown on cable operators and providers of satellite dish equipment, the American Chamber of Commerce here was told Wednesday.

“When (Rupert) Murdoch made his sort of big publicity piece buying over Star (TV), he literally made this quote, which was something to the effect of ‘taking media into restricted markets,’ which if you’re China, Malaysia or Singapore for that matter, is not what you want to hear,” Lynda Graham, Beijing-based managing director at Saatchi & Saatchi, told the American Chamber of Commerce.

“It is very interesting that in a very short period after that the (Chinese) government came out saying they’re going to have much more stringent regulations and the way they’re going to do that is by having tighter controls on the cable operators and providers of satellite dish equipment.”
