GLAAD honors ‘Seinfeld,’ ‘Philadelphia,’ ‘Angels’

TV’s “Seinfeld,” the film “Philadelphia” and the play “Angels in America” were among the 1994 Media Awards given by the Los Angeles and New York chapters of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

The awards will be presented March 19 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles and March 13 at the Plaza Hotel in New York.

Those awards presented in L.A. included the visibility award to Harvey Fierstein; the film award, “Philadelphia”; indie film (gay), “The Wedding Banquet”; recording artist, Melissa Etheridge; TV comedy series, “Seinfeld”; TV dramatic series, “Sisters”; TV dramatic episode, “Law and Order”; TV special, CBS’ “Other Mothers”; indie film (lesbian), “Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Lives”; and community service award, Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica.

The New York awards are: theater award, “Angels in America”; advertising award, Kenneth Cole; TV comedy award, HBO’s “Dream On”; TV journalism award, “Gays in the ’90s”; magazine journalism award, Spin for “Hip-Hop’s Black Eye”; syndicated columnist award, Deb Price, columnist for the Detroit News; and a special award to MTV.
