Fox Broadcasting Co. has confirmed a pickup on the Universal TV superhero concept “Mantis” as a series for next fall as well as another Spelling TV concept — this one from director Joel Schumacher — for a summer run.

“Mantis,” which stars Carl Lumbley as a disabled scientist who fights crime by virtue of a specially designed suit, appeared dead in the water before its two-hour pilot aired Jan. 24, grabbing Fox’s best rating for a made-for-TV movie since the Monday-night franchise was introduced last June.

Sam Raimi, Sam Hamm and Bruce Zabel are exec producers.

The untitled Schumacher series is an hourlong suspense anthology exec produced by the director, Aaron Spelling and E. Duke Vincent. Spelling and Schumacher previously collaborated on the short-lived CBS series “2000 Malibu Road.”

Each episode will consist of two segments linked by a narrator who sells unusual curios that give rise to the stories.

Fox previously announced another Spelling series, “Models Inc.,” that will be spun out of “Melrose Place” during episodes in May. Spelling and Vincent are also exec producers on that project, which stars Linda Gray.
