Film Roman has Felix in the bag

Film Roman, producer of “Garfield” and animation for “The Simpsons,” has acquired exclusive rights to develop and produce new animated programming based on the character of Felix the Cat.

The company obtained the rights from Don Oriolo, owner of the character, which first appeared in a 1922 movie before spawning a King Features comic strip and the animated TV shorts produced by Oriolo’s father, Joe Oriolo, for Translux.

Film Roman said it intends to develop a series featuring the character as well as an animated feature. The company’s current production slate includes the Saturday-morning shows “Garfield,””Bobby’s World” and “Cro” in addition to the Gracie Films primetime series “The Simpsons” and “The Critic.”
