The Walt Disney Co. picked the eve of tonight’s Winter Olympics ice skating showdown to confirm its multifaceted agreement with skater Nancy Kerrigan.
As reported (Daily Variety, Feb. 4), the deal includes a movie biography for ABC, to be produced by the Steve Tisch Co.; a primetime ABC ice skating special, also exec produced by Tisch; personal appearances at the Disney theme parks and in annually televised Christmas and Easter parades; and a children’s book through Hyperion Books co-authored by Kerrigan.
ABC also is expected to release a skating/exercise homevideo featuring Kerrigan.
Disney and Tisch won Kerrigan’s rights from ProServ after a bidding process that included roughly 50 production entities. Tisch was represented in the complicated negotiations by the William Morris Agency’s Rob Lee.
Disney Studios prez Richard Frank said in a statement, “Kerrigan’s life and career has been synonymous with the strong family values that are the cornerstone of Disney entertainment.”
