Weiner tapped New Regency legal VP

Less than a week after installing former Columbia corporate exec VP Michael Nathanson as new company prexy, New Regency Prods. has named William S. Weiner as VP of legal affairs, the Warner Bros.-based outfit announced Monday.

Weiner, who will oversee the legal affairs of New Regency, will report to exec VP and chief operating officer Adam Platnick.

From 1989 until recently, Weiner served as VP of business and legal affairs for 21st Century Film Corp., which in 1993 suffered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings and the ankling of co-topper Menahem Golan.

Prior to his 21st Century duties, Weiner was counsel to Cannon/Pathe Films, where he performed similar legal functions. Weiner also worked as an entertainment attorney in the offices of Sam Perlmutter, where he repped indie film and TV production outfits.

“We welcome Bill as a valuable member of our new team,” Platnick said in a statement.

New Regency topper Arnon Milchan said in a recent interview that his production company would step up its slate to 15 pictures in 1995, up from five on this year’s feature slate.

Among the upcoming films are “Boys on the Side,” an AIDS road movie starring Whoopi Goldberg, Mary-Louise Parker and Drew Barrymore, and the legal thriller “The Client,” starring Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones.
