Eric Mitchell was named director of financial planning and analysis for Sony Pictures Entertainment Tuesday, a promotion from manager in that area.

Mitchell will concentrate on crunching numbers and long-term planning for TriStar Pictures.

He will work closely with Paul Smith, TriStar senior veepee for operations and business affairs and a key dealmaker and strategist at the studio.

Announcement of Mitchell’s promotion was made by Sheldon Rabinowitz, senior veepee of Sony Pictures Entertainment motion picture group. Mitchell joined the parent company of TriStar and Columbia three years ago as an assistant manager of financial planning and analysis.

Mitchell was involved in several large TriStar deals, including the studio’s co-financing deal with IndieProd and Japanese Satellite Broadcasting Co.; negotiations for TriStar’s acquisition of all domestic rights and certain foreign rights to the summer hit “Cliffhanger”; and TriStar’s acquisition of movie remake rights to Toho Co.’s “Godzilla.”

Mitchell is an MBA graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management. He completed undergraduate work at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh.
