Whitney Houston has been tapped to receive the Award of Merit during the American Music Awards ceremonies at the Shrine Auditorium Feb. 7.

Houston, who also topped the recent American Music Awards noms with seven nods, will receive the award on the live three-hour telecast on ABC.

The award is given to a member of the musical community in recognition of “outstanding contributions to the musical entertainment of the American public.” Houston was cited as the biggest-selling female artist of all time and the first artist to have seven consecutive No. 1 singles.
