Originally dubbed the Piano Men tour, the pairing of Elton John and Billy Joel will hit the road this summer with a series of stadium shows scheduled.
The tour, now called Face to Face — Summer of ’94, will kick off July 8 at Veteran’s Stadium in Philadelphia, with dates in 10 other East Coast cities already on the boards.
“Getting this opportunity to share the stage with Billy Joel is very exciting to me,” John said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to singing and having a blast with him.”
Joel, who will interrupt his “River of Dreams” tour to participate, suggested the pairing. Joel will resume his tour in the fall and take it into the spring of ’95.
“I’ve wanted to work with Elton John for a long time and now it has finally come together for us,” Joel said. “It should be a fantastic show for the audience and great fun for both of us.”
The tour is expected to hit the West Coast in the latter part of the summer and will be designed similar to John’s 1992 tour with Eric Clapton, with the performers alternating in the opening slot.
A grand finale featuring both artists will also be a tour component.
Other July tour stops include Municipal Stadium, Cleveland (14); Foxboro Stadium, Boston (17); RFK Stadium, Washington, D.C. (20); and Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J. (22). Tickets go on sale April 11.
