Imago starts poetry imprint

Believing that the one thing missing in the spoken-word genre has been a full-fledged record label, Imago Recording Co. has pacted with NuYo Records to give poets an outlet for their wares.

“This opportunity comes at a wonderful moment,” said NuYo principal Bob Holman.

“America is thirsting for words with meaning.”

The first fruits of the venture will be the debut from Maggie Estep, whose “rant ‘n’ roll” spoken-word style will be featured on her “No More Mr. Nice Girl” disc.

NuYo will also release the soundtrack to Sekou Sundiata’s (also a principal in NuYo) talking-book concert, “Mystery of Love,” which will be produced at the American Music Theater in Philadelphia.

“I believe not only that these poets are ready for prime time, but that prime time is ready for them,” said Imago founder Terry Ellis.

The label will also help tie its artists into video and film projects.
