Vince Gill, Alan Jackson and Reba McEntire copped six nominations each to lead contenders for the 28th annual TNN Music City News Country Awards. Nominations for the nods, which are voted on by fans, were announced by the Nashville Network and Music City News Thursday in Nashville.
Wynonna, Billy Ray Cyrus and John Michael Montgomery, three artists whose discs were among the bestselling debut albums in the history of the genre, received two nods each. Conspicuous by his absence was Travis Tritt, who did not get any nods; Garth Brooks earned only one.
Gill and Jackson received nominations for entertainer of the year, male artist, vocal collaboration, video and single. Gill also picked up an instrumentalist nod, while Jackson added album of the year to his list.
McEntire earned nods for entertainer, female artist, video and single. She also picked up two vocal collaboration noms.
Cyrus received a nom for male artist and Montgomery for single of the year. Both were given noms for star of tomorrow. Brooks earned an entertainmer of the year nom, while Wynonna was tapped for vocal collaboration and female artist.
The 2 1/2-hour awards show will be telecast live from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville June 6 on TNN.
