Mariah Carey moves back into the top spot on the SoundScan album sales chart this week, according to numbers obtained from a record industry source.
Her Columbia-issued “Music Box” sold an estimated 163,000 copies, down from 260,000 last week, but good enough for the No. 1 ranking in a week that saw numbers continue to drop from holiday-season highs.
Total figures for the top 200 titles on the chart were 40% lower than last weeks’.
Back at No. 2 is “Vs.,” the sophomore Epic effort from Pearl Jam. Its sales for the week totaled more than 132,000, down from last week’s 260,000. Michael Bolton’s new “One Thing” (Columbia) returned to No. 3, its peak so far, on sales of more than 129,000. Snoop Doggy Dogg’s Interscope effort, “Doggystyle,” last week’s No. 1, fell to No. 4 on business of nearly 124,000 copies.
The only notable debut of the week is from the soundtrack to Jane Campion’s critically acclaimed movie, “The Piano.” The Virgin release bows at No. 151 on sales of 9,600 copies.
