Robert L. Carberry, one of the IBM Corp. execs charged with leading Big Blue onto the infopike, ankled the computer giant for a top management job at Blockbuster Entertainment Corp.
Carberry on Monday was named Blockbuster’s veepee of technology and will be in charge of the company’s video-on-demand efforts and its venture into transmitting digitized entertainment products.
Carving a niche
As president of IBM’s Firework Partners and a member of the board of governors of the IBM Academy of Technology, Carberry has been at the front of the computer maker’s efforts to carve itself a niche in the emerging interactive multimedia world.
He was also part of the management that created Kaleida Labs Inc., the IBM/Apple Computer Co. joint venture that’s developing an operating system for multimedia programs.
And he was involved in IBM’s NewLeaf/Fairway venture with Blockbuster that is developing a system to transmit digitized information.
“In our association with him, he has demonstrated a unique grasp of and appreciation for the whole array of opportunities for Blockbuster,” H. Wayne Huizenga, Blockbuster chairman/CEO, said in a statement.
Blockbuster officials and Carberry could not be reached Monday.
