‘Maiden’ starts Taper season

The Mark Taper Forum schedule gets under way Jan. 27 with Ariel Dorfman’s drama “Death and the Maiden,” the first of four plays scheduled. Robert Egan will direct.

It will be followed by Anton Chekhov’s “The Wood Demon” April 7-May 22. This production will feature the world premiere translation by Nicholas Saunders and Frank Dwyer and will be directed by Dwyer.

Luis Valdez’s “Bandido!” runs June 9-July 24. Presented in association with AT&T: OnStage, the play will be directed by Jose Luis Valenzuela and co-produced with El Teatro Campesino. It is described as a musical that dissects the mythology of the Old West.

The season will close with Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner’s “The Heavenly Theatre,” a new musical subtitled “Hymns for Martyred Actors.” With music by Mel Marvin, the show runs Aug. 11-Sept. 25. It will be directed by Brian Kulick.
