“We Are All Stars” offers a humorous look at Latin life, while examining notions of fame and the power of mass media. Fast-paced commercial venture should do well in other Latin territories.
Tale concerns the dysfunctional family of Carmen Huambachano (Milena Alva), religious viewers of Lima’s weekly TV series “We Are All Stars,” in which a normal family is selected to be interviewed and then given the chance to win prizes.
When Carmen’s clan is chosen and the TV crew appears at the front door, the family must come to grips with how it wants to be viewed by the nation. The house must be repainted and decorated, everyone pulls out their best finery, and a husband must be found to replace the “no good rat” who left Carmen years earlier.
Helmer Luis Felipe Degregori has a good feel for the material and keeps the plot moving. The ensemble cast, especially the youthful actors, is sharp.
Video images from the TV show and the satires of other TV programs vary the texture of the film.
