Joan Plowright has signed to topline in “Hotel Sorrento,” director Richard Franklin’s feature film based on the eponymous 1990 Australian Writers’ Guild award-winning play by Hannie Rayson.
The English actress will play a retired teacher and former political activist who comes back into her own after her children have grown up. The plot deals with changing family values, conflict and reconciliation.
The pic, funded chiefly by the Australian Film Finance Corp., Beyond Films and Film Victoria, will shoot at the Victorian seaside resort of Sorrento. A start date is imminent, says Beyond.
Pic marks a homecoming for Franklin, who has been in the U.S. making films such as “Psycho II” and “FX2.”
