Morgan Creek buys ‘Cairo’

Morgan Creek Prods. has paid six figures to buy an action-adventure screenplay by “Heartbreak Ridge” and “No Mercy” scribe Jim Carabatsos. The script, called “Cairo,” is about a New York cop out to settle a score.

Morgan Creek acquired the screenplay in the last two weeks, buying it early in what it called a “preemptive strike against other potential bidders.”

No names

While no names are attached, the company hopes to attract an A-list director and star and make it a big-budget, high-profile project. The script is being shopped to directors now.

The pic will be produced by James G. Robinson and executive produced by Gary Barber; Carabatsos will act as co-producer.

“Cairo” is about a policeman named Eddie Cairo who puts his life in danger when he goes after a government-protected gun dealer.

“It weaves action, suspense, romance and intrigue into a very contemporary story about a gutsy New York street cop,” said Robinson, who is also Morgan Creek’s chairman/CEO.

A New York-based scribe, Carabatsos also penned “Hamburger Hill,” inspired by his Army experience in Vietnam. He is currently working on “Cliffhanger II.”

The company plans to start production this fall, lensing in Gotham. The film will be distributed domestically through Morgan Creek’s ongoing distrib deal with Warner Bros. and internationally by Morgan Creek Intl.
