‘Little Women’ adds Byrne

Gabriel Byrne will star opposite Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon in “Little Women,” which starts production Monday in Vancouver, Columbia Pictures announced Wednesday.

Production start on the Christmas release was announced by Colpix prexy Lisa Henson.

Rounding out the “Little Women” cast are Samantha Mathis, Trini Alvarado, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, Christian Bale, Eric Stoltz and Mary Wickes. Gillian Armstrong (“My Brilliant Career”) directs from a screenplay by Robin Swicord (“The Perez Family”) based on the Louisa May Alcott novel. Producer is Denise Di Novi.

The production start comes less than a week after Columbia confirmed lensing plans for Gus Van Sant’s comedy based on the novel “To Die For,” starring Nicole Kidman and Matt Dillon. Colpix is also in pre-production on director Jerry Zucker’s “First Knight.”
