Lancit Media Prods. Ltd. has acquired movie and TV rights to Lois Lowry’s 1994 Newbery Medal-winning novel “The Giver.”
The deal gives Lancit exclusive rights to adapt the novel for one year, with the option for an additional year.
The book, published by Houghton Mifflin, is the story of a futuristic boy growing up in a seemingly ideal society free of conflict, poverty and injustice who begins to sense the dark secrets that underlie the fragile perfection of his world.
Lancit already has the rights to a second Newbery-winning novel, “Maniac Magee,” which is being developed as a Disney feature starring Elijah Wood. Among Lancit’s children’s and family programming are the series “Reading Rainbow,” which won three 1993 Emmy Awards; “Ramona,” currently airing on the Disney Channel; and the NBC telefilm “Miracle Child.”
“The Puzzleworks,” a co-production with KCET/Los Angeles, will premiere in early 1995 as a daily PBS preschool series.
