Columbia Pictures has moved the release date of its high-profile summer sequel “City Slickers 2” from Memorial Day to June 10, the studio confirmed Wednesday.
Columbia Pictures president of distribution Jeff Blake said the studio decided June 10 was “a great playtime and less competitive” for the Billy Crystal sequel.
Industry pundits have predicted that Memorial Day 1994 will be one of the most hotly contested box office battles in recent memory, with Universal’s “Flintstones” and Paramount Pictures’ “Beverly Hills Cop III” scheduled to open on the summer kick-off holiday weekend. On June 10, “City Slickers II” will open against WB’s “Natural Born Killers.”
For the superstitious in Hollywood, Columbia’s move also positions “City Slickers II” to open on the equivalent summer weekend as the original, which opened June 7, 1991. That movie went on to gross $ 122.3 million in domestic box office receipts.
