Buena Vista Intl. has chosen Barcelona-based Laurenfilm as its new partner for theatrical distribution in Spain, replacing its year-old deal with C.B. Films.Buena Vista’s product, which includes movies from Walt Disney, Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures, will be handled by Laurenfilm from the end of March, starting with “Sister Act 2.” Laurenfilm, one of Spain’s leading distribs, is also a key exhibitor with screens in Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza and Palma de Mallorca. It also has produced Pedro Almodovar’s “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” and other movies. Buena Vista Intl. president Mark Zoradi said, “We very much look forward to this new collaboration with Laurenfilm and believe that the overall philosophy of their business will perfectly match our objectives for the Spanish market.” No official reason was given for Buena Vista’s decision to drop C.B. Films, but Disney insiders indicated concern with the company’s long-term financial stability. Although 1993 was an outstanding year for Disney movies in Spain, and the Spanish office was even named best international performer last year in the company’s internal awards.
