Redefining the role of the homevideo retailer and positioning stores to become major players in marketing emerging technologies were among the topics addressed during the Video Software Dealers Assn. regional leaders conference in San Francisco.Confab keynoter Rick Karpel, VSDA exec VP, called on retailers to become informed about the developing vidgame technologies and computer-based software such as CD-ROM. Karpel encouraged retailers to establish multimedia sections in their stores to help them tap into consumers’ interest in interactive and the advancing vidgame technology, which he predicts will represent an important cash source for the stores. “We are evolving from an association of video stores focused almost exclusively on the rental and sale of homevideo, to an association of home entertainment stores,” Karpel said.
