WILMINGTON, Del. — Thomson S.A., the Paris-based electronics conglomerate, has sued five music recording companies alleging violations of its U.S. patents on the basic design of compact discs.
In a suit filed in federal district court Feb. 25, the company named Time Warner Inc., Bertelsmann Inc., Thorn EMI North America Holdings Inc., Quixote Corp. and Nippon Columbia Ltd. and their subsidiaries as defendants.
Thomson is seeking an order to stop the infringement, and a tripling of damages. It did not specify a monetary amount.
Thomson was given U.S. patents in 1989 for the arrangement of information on an optical disc, such as a CD.
