Aussie entrepreneur Skase arrested

CANBERRA, Australia — Spanish police arrested bankrupt Australian entrepreneur Christopher Skase on the resort island of Majorca, where he has lived since his media empire collapsed in 1991, Australian Attorney General Michael Lavarch said today.

An Australian judge ordered Skase arrested Jan. 25 to face 32 charges by the Australian Securities Commission relating to his management of his Qintex group of companies.

Skase, who is in his mid-40s, claims he is too ill with asthma, emphysema and other lung complaints to travel to Australia to face the charges.

Skase’s entertainment and leisure group Qintex was put in receivership in November 1989 with debts of $ 1.1 billion after a doomed bid for U.S. film studios MGM/United Artists.
