Following an extremely successful repeat over the weekend of “Donahue” featuring Mary Jo and Joey Buttafuoco, key figures in the highly publicized “Long Island Lolita” case, WNBC-TV has landed Joey Buttafuoco for a one-hour unedited news special to air Friday.
The special, hosted by anchor Chuck Scarborough, will discuss the way the media, including “Donahue,” treated Buttafuoco and the case.
Buttafuoco also will field new questions from the anchor.
Buttafuoco’s wife, Mary Jo, was shot in the head by Amy Fisher. Following the incident, Fisher claims that she and Joey were having an affair and that he, too , was part of the plan to kill his wife. Joey has denied this charge throughout.
However, when the Buttafuocos appeared on “Donahue” the audience and the host appeared not to believe Joey’s story. An angered Buttafuoco told reporters afterward that he and his wife were set up by “Donahue” and treated unfairly.
Yet the program was a ratings blockbuster for WNBC. When the show aired on Jan. 5 it scored a 16.1/39. That figure was easily surpassed last Saturday when the station repeated the installment at 7 p.m. The program then notched a 19.2/ 32.
