Leading French network TF1 has the greenlight to broadcast in Belgium while carrying advertising specifically targeting the local population.
The web, which is carried over the air and on cable in Belgium, has been kept from getting access to the Belgium ad market since 1989.
The European Commission has informed the authorities in French-speaking Belgium that they do not have the right to prevent TF1 from carrying such advertising.
In 1989, the Belgium authorities blocked TF1’s access to the Belgium advertising market, estimated to be worth around 900 million francs ($ 155 million) per year. The move was aimed at defending ad revenues of local broadcasters.
