Apparently undaunted by tepid results for the pairing of Dan Rather and Connie Chung, CBS will also try a co-anchor format on “The CBS Evening News’ ” Sunday edition — with “CBS This Morning” anchors Harry Smith and Paula Zahn paired on the broadcast through August and into September.
Smith and Zahn will continue to host “CBS This Morning,” and the Sunday broadcast should provide additional exposure for the morningshow team, consistently third in the ratings behind “Good Morning America” and “Today.”
The teaming of Smith and Zahn begins this Sunday. Like the nightly newscast, it marks the first time the network has employed co-anchors on the Sunday evening news.
Chung anchored the weekend show before being tapped to join Rather in June. After the initial media bump, ratings fell for the “CBS Evening News,” which has landed in third place three of the last four weeks.
Smith has been with “CBS This Morning” since 1987, while Zahn joined the show in 1990.
