AUCKLAND, New Zealand — New Zealand’s American-owned pay-TV Sky Entertainment has just reached a milestone, winning its 100,000th subscriber after just three years.
Sky is 51% owned by a U.S. consortium, which includes Time Warner and Tele-Communications Inc., and the improved fortunes of the three-channel system owe much to the overseas owners.
Operations manager John Fellet said that when he and chief executive Nate Smith arrived two years ago, the subscriber base was just 25,000. Broadening the web’s appeal and subsidizing part of the installation costs were key elements of the rapid growth since then, said Fellet.
Exex believe they will double the number of Sky subscribers in the next two years as the network expands throughout the country.
