A planned sitcom starring Sinbad will set sail next season out of Fox Broadcasting Co., which apparently edged CBS to reel in the project.

The show, which will be developed and exec produced by the former “Night Court” writer-producer duo of Larry Strawther and Gary Murphy, is as reported part of a larger TV and first-look feature agreement between the former “A Different World” co-star and the Walt Disney Studios (Daily Variety, Feb. 3).

Although CBS expressed interest in the series as well, the comic’s representatives reportedly felt he’d be better off aligning himself with the youth-oriented Fox service. In a statement, Fox noted that Sinbad’s act is “in sync with those of our young-adult audience.”

In addition to “Different World,” Sinbad has appeared in various TV specials as well as the feature “Necessary Roughness.” He’s also slated to star in the movie “Houseguest,” to be produced for Disney through Joe Roth’s Caravan Pictures.
