Senators seeking relief for cablers

Eleven U.S. senators have written the FCC imploring the agency to provide relief to small cable TV operators threatened by cable reregulation.

The letter was sent by 10 Republicans and one Democrat, most of whom voted against the 1992 Cable Act.

The missive noted that the cable bill was “hailed as a victory for consumers, ” but that “rural customers will think otherwise if their cable systems are forced out of business because they could not comply with the regulations.”

Small cable operators who claim they could be forced into bankruptcy by trying to comply with the new rate regulation rules enacted by the FCC have launched a well-coordinated lobbying effort to coax the agency into simplifying the regs. Interim FCC chairman James Quello also has suggested exempting certain cable companies with fewer than 1,000 subscribers from all aspects of reregulation.
