QVC sister channel QVC the Fashion Channel (QVC2) is getting a makeover and a new boss.As expected (Daily Variety, July 20), QVC chairman Barry Diller announced Thursday that Candice M. Carpenter, the former president of Time-Life Television and Video, would lead a reconfigured channel with a much greater emphasis on programming. QVC2 becomes Q2 when it bows in spring 1994 and moves from Westchester, Pa. , to home bases in New York and Los Angeles. “Q2 is a blank piece of paper with no built-in biases,” Diller said in a prepared statement. “I believe Candice Carpenter has the combination of creative and business skill to lead the development of this project.” Carpenter said Q2 will be “a combination of a great specialty store and a great specialty magazine.” She pointed to programs like Time-Life Music’s slick infomercial for a Rolling Stone History of Rock CD collection as a model for Q2 programming. Carpenter said Q2 also will program how-to shows, focusing on “cooking to parenting to home improvement,” then pitch products used on the shows. She envisions interview shows where authors, entertainers and others can pitch their wares. “We’re going to program Q2 so that it’s competitive with all the other entertainment and information programming that’s out there,” Carpenter said.
