MTV Networks plans to announce today the launch of MTV Latin America, a 24 -hour, Spanish-language music channel.
MTV declined comment.
The new Miami-based service, while aimed at markets in Central and South America, is expected to be available to domestic cablers.
MTV Latin America is the latest in the music web’s forays into the international market. Its biggest affiliate, MTV Europe, reaches an estimated 40 million European homes. Last December, with Tokyo-based partner Music Channel Co. Ltd. (a partnership of Pioneer Electronic Corp., TDK Corp. and the Tokyu Agency), MTV launched MTV Japan.
Latin America represents one of the few arenas left for the globalization of MTV. The company already has MTV Brazil. With a Spanish-language channel, MTV has the potential to reach 40 million viewers in Mexico and Central and South America.
