Some 80 TV production and distribution companies from 18 countries have so far signed on the bottom line as exhibitors at the Mip Asia Screenings and Conferences, skedded for Nov. 30-Dec. 2, 1994, in Hong Kong. The first-time event is organized by the Reed Midem Organisation, which sponsors the annual Mip and Mipcom TV markets in Cannes.

Among the U.S. participants are King World, New World, MTM, MGM, Saban, ITC and MTV. The Hollywood majors are also likely participants, said a Midem source, and plans for their stand space will be worked out in the next few weeks. Numerous Australian, British and French companies also have signed on early.

The event is being organized in response to the growing need for programming in the Pacific Rim area, where new satellite and cable ventures are coming on stream almost monthly. The burgeoning territory represents almost two-thirds of the world’s population.

Midem reps say they have already doubled the space they’ll be taking in the Hong Kong Convention Center to accommodate the growing list of participating companies.

In addition to the buying and selling of program rights, Mip Asia will sponsor a series of panel discussions focusing on the trends and issues confronting programmers in the Pacific Rim market.
