KCBS edges KCAL for top slot in Golden Mike nods

KCBS-TV narrowly surpassed KCAL-TV for the most honors in the Radio & Television News Assn. of Southern California’s 1993 Golden Mike Awards competition.

But the O&O failed to qualify as a finalist for the best 60-minute newscast between 4 p.m. and midnight.

In fact, all of the network-owned stations in Los Angeles got shut out of the category, with indies KCAL, KCOP, KTLA and San Diego ABC affiliate KGTV vying for the top prize at the Universal Hilton ceremonies Jan. 22.

The RTNA, which comprises broadcast journalists and public relations execs, has announced the TV and radio winners in all but the top newscast categories.

Overall, KCBS was a winner or finalist in nine categories, with KCAL runner-up with seven. KTTV grabbed six, followed by KCOP with five, KABC with three, KTLA with two and KNBC one.

In the radio categories, California State University, Northridge, station KCSN-FM once again claimed the title for best newscast under 15 minutes.

KNX collected nine awards and finalist honors, while KFWB garnered seven.
