Those bracing for the battle between Steven Spielberg’s giant submarine and Superman had better not overlook Fox Broadcasting Co.’s “Martin,” which got off to a solid start with its season premiere Sunday.

The show finished a strong second in Nielsen overnight markets in its new 8 p.m. timeslot, and Fox actually built in the next half-hour with the premiere of the new Warner Bros. sitcom “Living Single.”

‘Martin’ not short

“Martin” posted a 10.9 rating, 19 share in metered markets, finishing second in households behind “Murder, She Wrote” (12.4/22) and bettering every share for “In Living Color” since March.

“Living Single,” starring Kim Coles and Queen Latifah, built on that lead-in by 5% to an 11.4/19, marking Fox’s best share in that time period since the movie “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” on Feb. 21.

The shows faced all-rerun competition, and will have a few weeks to try to solidify their status before the big guns arrive, with ABC’s “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” and Steven Spielberg’s “seaQuest DSV” both to bow in the 8 p.m. hour Sept. 12.

National figures will be published Wednesday, with Fox traditionally dropping somewhat from its overnight-market levels.
