Complaint cites WNYW storm news

A group of New York-area meteorologists has filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission over the conduct of Fox TV station WNYW Channel 5, New York, during the severe winter storm on Dec. 10-11.

In a press release, the North Jersey Weather Observers and the Long Island Weather Observers, two organizations of amateur and professional meteorologists, cited WNYW for “dereliction of its duty to serve the public interest and necessity” during the storm.

According to the complaint, the station ignored some National Weather Service watches and warnings altogether, while in other cases broadcast watches and warnings that either were not in effect or had never been issued.

The station was unavailable for comment. WNYW is licensed to Fox Television, a unit of News Corp.
