Columbia Pictures TV has reportedly picked up a piece of the new CBS comedy series “Dave’s World” in exchange for freeing up actor Meshach Taylor to join the cast.

According to sources, Taylor had a holding deal with Columbia that was to follow the end of the studio’s CBS sitcom “Designing Women,” but instead he’s turned up on the CBS Entertainment Prods.

Although Columbia has struck network co-production and distribution arrangements involving a handful of series — including deals with CBS on the in-house shows “The Building” and “Walker, Texas Ranger”– sources say this deal is more limited and that the question of who’ll handle distribution on “Dave’s” has yet to be addressed.

Based on the revised financial interest and syndication rules, networks can produce more of the shows they air but must still rely on third parties for domestic syndication.

“Dave’s World” has been allotted one of CBS’ best new-series time periods and will premiere Sept. 20 in the slot between “Evening Shade” and “Murphy Brown.”

Taylor was also a regular on “Buffalo Bill” prior to his seven seasons with “Designing Women.”
