GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Connie Chung’s invitation to speak at a banquet here Friday was withdrawn after organizers of a boycott over Colorado’s anti-gay rights amendment criticized her decision to attend.CBS Sports prez Neal Pilson will step in for the correspondent, the network said yesterday. New York Boycott Colorado distributed thousands of leaflets in New York City criticizing Chung’s scheduled appearance. Joe Carriere, general manager of CBS affiliate KREX-TV, said Tuesday he wrote Chung a letter withdrawing the invitation. “I didn’t want to put her in a position of no-win. If she came, she was taking one side; if she didn’t she was taking another,” he said. “The network has a longstanding commitment that we made to our affiliate to make this appearance (by a CBS representative),” said CBS Sports spokeswoman Susan Kerr in New York. Kerr did not explain how Pilson was chosen to take Chung’s place.
