Silvio Caranchini

Silvio “Sil” Caranchini, long-time associate of Bob Hope, died July 8 of cancer at the Kenneth Norris Cancer Center in L.A. He was 79.

In 1937 he joined NBC in New York as a staff announcer/field engineer and six years later moved to the West Coast.

Caranchini’s association with Hope began in 1950 when he served as a recording engineer for Hope’s NBC radio and TV shows. He later worked at NBC as a unit manager.

Since 1957 he served as advance man for the comedian’s location specials and all but one of Hope’s overseas USO tours.

Caranchini retired from NBC in 1981 and joined Hope Enterprises as associate producer. He held that position until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Ione; three daughters and three grandchildren; a sister and a brother.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Church of the Hills, Forest Lawn , Hollywood Hills. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the USC/Norris Cancer Hospital, 1441 Eastlake Ave., L.A. 90053.
