FRANKLIN, Mich. (AP) — Reva Shwayder-Gothelf, 91, an artist who was the subject of an Academy Award-winning documentary, died Aug. 26 of complications from a stroke.
Shwayder-Gothelf and fellow artist Louis Gothelf were the subject of the documentary “Young at Heart.” She was 84 and he was 85 when they married in 1986 .
The film became a surprise hit and won an Oscar in 1988. It focused on Shwayder-Gothelf’s career, how she coped with the death of her first husband after 55 years of marriage, and her remarriage late in life.
Shwayder-Gothelf taught herself to paint in 1948. She produced hundreds of paintings and had numerous exhibitions by the time she retired two years ago.
