Milton J. Tatelman

Milton J. Tatelman, 50, advertising creative consultant and theater critic, died June 11, in Provincetown, Mass., of AIDS-related lymphoma.

Born in Newton, Mass., Tatelman graduated from Case Western Reserve U. in Cleveland.

He received his master’s degree in business advertising from Bernard Baruch College in Manhattan and was subsequently hired as the youngest advertising copywriter at Ogilvy & Mather, where he helped create the Clio Award-winning campaign for the Mountain Dew soft drink account.

Tatelman went on to work in the ad department of Paramount Pictures and later became an independent advertising consultant for major films including “2001: A Space Odyssey,””Goodbye, Columbus,””Rocky,””Nashville,””The Godfather,””The Longest Yard” and “Good Morning, Vietnam.”

Under the pen name Newton North, he wrote film criticism for the New York Herald Tribune, FM Guide and the New York Post. He was the entertainment editor and theater critic for Key magazine from 1978 to 1991. He served on the voting committee for the Tony Awards and was a member of Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk.

Tatelman was also lectured on “Seduced at the Movies,” about how the media sell films.

Survived by two brothers.
