Maria Thingvail

Maria Thingvail, former Latin dance specialist, died Nov. 27 in Thousand Oaks after a long illness.

She was 74.

During the late 1930s and early 1940s, she and her second husband, Julio Martinez Sr., were a popular Latin dance team that performed in New York and Los Angeles. They performed with the orchestras of Xavier Cugat and Noro Morales.

They danced at stage shows at downtown L.A.’s Million Dollar Theatre and at the Paramount Theatre.

She is survived by four sons, Daily Variety drama critic Julio Martinez, singer/actor Leslie Jon Martinez, George Reyes and Harry Reyes; daughter Julika Martinez Barrett, and her husband, Jack Thingvail.

A Dec. 11 memorial service at sea is planned.
