Katz Communications, the rep firm with the largest number of TV-station clients, has promoted Bill Carroll to VP and director of programming for the Katz Television Group.
That’s the word from industry sources, who say that Carroll, VP of programming for one of the group’s divisions, Katz American, displaces John von Soosten, who gets the new title senior VP of programming for Katz National, a division made up of the independent stations Katz represents.
Katz could announce the personnel shift as early as today, one source said.
Although von Soosten is a senior VP, he’ll report to Carroll, who’ll continue to be in charge of the American group, which consists of large-market network affiliates. Ruth Lee, VP of programming forKatz Continental, the small-market affiliate division, who used to report to von Soosten, will now report to Carroll.
Von Soosten won’t be running the group anymore, but sources say the change allows him to devote more time to Katz’s indie-station clients.
The indies require more care and feeding because, unlike network affiliates, which get the bulk of their programming from the network, they have to go out into the marketplace to purchase shows that will fill their 24-hour schedules.
Katz also has added a new portfolio to von Soosten’s duties, the search for new clients in such areas as distant broadcast satellite operations and international broadcasters.
