RIAA deals out platinum to Kenny G, Statler Bros.

The Recording Industry Assn. of America has certified Kenny G’s Arista album “Breathless” for sales of 5 million units, topping the July list of certifications by the trade group.

The album, released in November of last year, has been comfortably nestled inside the Billboard 200’s Top 20 since then. Joining Kenny G in the multiplatinum winner’s circle are the Statler Bros., whose “Best of the Statler Bros.” has now sold 2 million units, and Neil Diamond, whose “Gold” album has moved 2 million units on the defunct UNI label.

Ten albums were granted platinum laurels, given to records whose sales surpass 1 million units sold. Certifications went to Reba McEntire, “Whoever’s in New England” on MCA; three Neil Diamond albums, “Gold,””Moods,” and “Tap Root Manuscript,” all on UNI; Wynonna’s “Tell Me Why” on MCA; the Statler Bros.’ “Christmas Card,” on Mercury; the Judds, “Love Can Build a Bridge,” on RCA/Nashville; Aaron Tippin, “Read Between the Lines,” also on RCA/Nashville; Soul Asylum, “Grave Dancer’s Union,” on Columbia; and Rod Stewart, “Unplugged … and Seated” on Warner Bros.

Gold mined

Gold album certifications, given for sales of 500,000 units, went to McEntire , “Merry Christmas to You” on MCA; Yanni, “In My Time” on Private Music; Neil Diamond, “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show” on UNI; Wynonna, “Tell Me Why” on MCA; the Statler Bros., “Holy Bible — New Testament” on Mercury; Anthrax, “Sound of White Noise” on Elektra; and 4 Non-Blondes, “Bigger, Better, Faster, More,” on Interscope.

Also gold were Run-D.M.C., “Down With the King” on Profile; Aerosmith, “Done With Mirrors” on Geffen; Luther Vandross, “Never Let Me Go” on Epic; the soundtrack to “Menace II Society,” issued by Jive; Natalie Cole, “Take a Look,” on Elektra; Rod Stewart, “Unplugged … and Seated” on Warner Bros.; the soundtrack to “Beverly Hills, 90210” on Giant; and Donald Fagen, “Kamakiriad” on Reprise.

One short-form album achieved gold status in July, Ozzy Osbourne’s “Just Say Ozzy” on Epic.

Platinum singles for July, awarded for sales of 1 million units, include “Duice” by the Dazzey Duks on Tony Mercedes Records/Bellmark; “Weak” by S.W.V. on RCA; and “Whoot, There It Is” by 95 South on Wrap Records.

Gold singles, which have sold 500,000 units, include Onyx, “Slam” on JMJ/RAL/Chaos/Columbia Records; UB40, “Can’t Help Falling in Love” on Virgin; S.W.V., “Weak,” on RCA; Expose, “I’ll Never Get Over You (Getting Over Me)” on Arista; 95 South, “Whoot, There It Is” on Wrap Records; Jodeci, “Lately” on Uptown/MCA; and Shai, “Comforter,” on Gasoline Alley.

The RIAA also reported one gold video for July, awarded for sales of 50,000 units. Ozzy Osbourne’s “Live and Loud” won the honors, issued through Sony Music Video.
