The Seattle sound scored big at MTV’s Video Music Awards, with Pearl Jam taking four of the spaceman statuettes during ceremonies Thursday at the Universal Amphitheatre. Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots also chalked up wins during the three-hour MTV broadcast.Pearl Jam took top honors for video of the year, group, metal/hard rock video and direction for “Jeremy,” the hit single from the group’s debut Epic effort, “Ten.” The band won all categories in which they were nominated. Female video nod went to k.d. lang, a dark horse in the category, for “Constant Craving,” the single from her Sire/Warner Bros. outing “Ingenue.” Lang bested such channel faves as Janet Jackson and Annie Lennox. Lenny Kravitz won male video honors for the title track from his Virgin disc “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” defeating Sting, GeorgeMichael and Peter Gabriel, the latter considered by many to be the front runner. Stone Temple Pilots scored the new artist honor for “Plush” from their Atlantic debut “Core,” while Nirvana won best alternative video for “In Bloom.” Grunge rockers Alice in Chains’ “Would?” from the soundtrack to Warner Bros.’ “Singles,” won for best vid from a film. MTV darlings En Vogue copped three honors. The four fabulous femmes, who led the list of nominees with seven nods, scored in the new R&B video category for “Free Your Mind,” also scoring trophies for best choreography and dance video. Gabriel notched two wins in technical categories, scoring in the editing and special effects for “Steam,” from his Geffen album “Us.” Madonna also scored two technical arena wins, with “Rain” from her “Erotica” album tops in art direction and cinematography. The breakthrough video nod went to Los Lobos for “Kiko & the Lavender Moon,” while Arrested Development received the rap video trophy for “People Everyday” disc on Chrysalis. R.E.M. and Aerosmith were shut out in the five categories in which they were nominated. Sting also went home empty-handed. However, Aerosmith won the viewers’ choice award.
